COGNITIVE REHABILITATION

The purpose of cognitive rehabilitation lies in alleviating cognitive deficits through a number of methods:

  1. Remediation of cognitive abilities using cognitive exercises

  2. Compensation for cognitive and behavioural limitations with strategies

  3. Education regarding cognitive functions to assist clients with understanding

and managing their behavioural and emotional reactions to changes in their functioning.

Cognitive Rehabilitation Services are designed for clients who experience cognitive difficulties as a result of acquired brain injury. Cognition, in general, can be explained as a collection of abilities such as attention, memory, problem-solving, and orientation that enable us to think, understand the world around us, and in turn, empower us to behave in a goal-oriented manner. Cognitive difficulties can have far-reaching real-life consequences including an inability to work efficiently, leading to stress and frustration along with other emotional and behavioural difficulties. In combination, all of these difficulties can make it difficult for an individual and his/ her family to cope with and address the daily struggles, resulting in social isolation and loneliness.

The ultimate goal of cognitive rehabilitation is to achieve measurable improvements that enable individuals to enjoy a more productive and satisfying life after injury, thereby increasing their quality of life.
